Found only along the coast of the Northern Pacific Ocean, sea otters usually live near rocky shorelines and sheltered coves. Once prized for their rich pelt the sea otter was almost hunted into extinction. Though some areas are still devoid of their cheerful faces, they are making a steady comeback. Over 150,000 live along the coast of Alaska and the former Soviet Union, with a smaller number of about 17,000 off the coast of California.
