The humpback is a baleen whale and uses baleen plates to feed. These plates are very coarse in texture, and have a composition similar to that of human fingernails. The edges of the plates are rimmed in coarse hair not unlike that of a goat. A Humpback whale can open it's mouth a full 90 degrees! When a whale's mouth is fully agape in this fashion, the story of Jonah becomes suddenly very believable.
