There is a legend that tells of the first totem pole coming from the sea, a Haida legend clarifies this by telling of a woman who saw animals at the base of a cliff when she was out collecting seaweed. She later described it to the Master carver who carved the first totem pole.

I suspect the bilateral symmetry created by the reflections along the shoreline inspired these legends, but who knows? I know I'll never look at another reflection again with out getting a kink in my neck.
