The first salmon taken by the West Coast natives in each new fishing season were treated with respectful rituals which amounted to 'welcoming ceremonies'. Among the northern groups, the first catch of salmon were laid on new mats in the chief's house. He would first sprinkle them with eagles down, the symbol of peace and goodwill, and then recite a welcoming speech. After this, the salmon were ready to be dressed and cooked for a feast! All of the bones and guts were carefully reserved and later put back into the water. Thus the salmon's spirit could rejuvenate itself and return again another year.
